A peixinha Ponyo vive no fundo do mar com o pai e as irmãs, e sempre teve muita curiosidade para saber como era o mundo fora dali. Um dia, pega carona numa água-viva para subir à superfície. Chegando lá, é capturada por uma rede de pesca e se perde no meio da enorme quantidade de lixo boiando no mar. Felizmente, é resgatada por Sosuke, menino de 5 anos que vive num rochedo à beira-mar. Ele promete cuidar dela pra sempre, mas o pai-peixe está determinado a recuperar a filha. Inspirado em A Pequena Sereia, de Hans Christian Andersen. Em competição no Festival de Veneza 2008.

Little fish Ponyo lives at the bottom of the sea with her father and sisters; she has always wondered what lay beyond. One day she rides a jellyfish all the way to the surface. She is caught in a fishing net! And gets lost in all the floating trash. Fortunately, 5-year old Sosuke rescues her. The boy lives on a rock at the edge of the sea. He promises to take care of her forever, but daddy fish is determined to bring his daughter back. Based on the The Little Mermaid, by Hans Christian Andersen. Nasceu em 1941, no Japão. Iniciou a carreira como animador do estúdio Toei Douga. Realizou seu primeiro longa em 1984, Kaze no tani no Naushika, baseado em seu mangá homônimo. Fez ainda Meu Vizinho Totoro (1988), Princesa Mononoke (1997) e O Castelo Animado (2004). Com A Viagem de Chihiro (2001), ganhou o Urso de Ouro no Festival de Berlim e o Oscar de Melhor Animação. Em 2005, recebeu um Leão de Ouro em Veneza pelo conjunto da obra.

Born in 1941 in Japan. His career began with animation at the Toei Douga studio. He made his first feature in 1984, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, based on his own manga. He also made My Neighbor Totoro (1988), Princess Mononoke (1997), and Howl's Moving Castle (2004). For Spirited Away (2001) he won a Golden Bear at Berlin and an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. In 2005 he received a Career Golden Lion at Venice.
